As we approach winter, this means the arrival of fog. Fog season in the Gulf runs from October to March. A lengthy fog closure could impact the region for days at a time. The arrival of winter also means possible strong north winds that can cause abnormally low levels of tides. The combination of wind, fog, and tide possibilities can mean delays for any tow transiting the ICW. As normal practice for Argosy, we will incorporate up to a 12 hour weather allowance for any project we bid happening during this time frame. The purpose of a weather allowance is to account for the possibility of these delays. Any time a tug has to stop for weather of any kind, standby time (demurrage rates) apply. The incorporation of a weather allowance in the rates we provide allows us to put any weather delays against the allotted weather allowance instead of using up standby time that was supposed to be for loading and unloading.

As expected, winter also means the arrival of freezing conditions. The greatest effects of this freeze are felt in the Upper Mississippi. From the end of November through approximately April 1st, the river shuts down after St. Louis due to icy conditions. Please keep this in mind if you are trying to move cargo during this time to any area north of St. Louis. We will also give a reminder if we receive any requests transiting the areas mentioned during this time frame.

We want to keep you informed. If there are any topics you would like to see us cover, please let us know. For any rate requests, please send them to barge@argosyship.com.

From our families to yours, wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
